Bates snaps long slump with victory over USM

Junior Caroline Falcone scored two goals to lead Bates College in a 3-1 win over the University of Southern Maine at Hannaford Field in Gorham.

The Bobcats snapped a seven-game losing streak with the win and improved to 2-7. The Huskies are 4-8.

Falcone scored the only goal of the first half in the 26th minute. Polly Merck gave the Bobcats a 2-0 lead with a penalty stroke 15 minutes into the second half. Peyton Dostie put the Huskies within a goal in the 54th minute when she scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season.

BASKETBALL

NBA: Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, a 6-foot-11 All-Star, suffered a hip flexor strain and did not participate in practice Thursday. His return is uncertain.

The Blazers also said guard Will Barton sustained a concussion.
