Raging Bulls to host playoff game on Saturday

The Southern Maine Raging Bulls (8-2) will play the North Shore Generals (3-6) in a New England Football League first-round playoff game at 7 p.m. Saturday at Deering High’s Memorial Field.

Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for ages 13-17 and free for 12-and-under.

PREP SCHOOLS

BOYS’SOCCER: Stephen Sherbahn scored just 1:34 into the game and Erik Wisniewski made eight saves as Berwick Academy (6-1-2, 4-1-1 Eastern Independent League) earned a 1-0 win over Pingree School (2-3-3, 1-3-2) at South Berwick.

GIRLS’ SOCCER: Liv Hurley scored for Berwick Academy in a 3-1 loss to Newton Country Day School at South Berwick.

BASKETBALL

NBA: Brooklyn Nets Coach Jason Kidd was suspended for two games after pleading guilty in a drunken driving case.

The NBA announced Kidd will miss the first two games of the season. The Nets open at Cleveland on Oct. 30 and host the defending champion Miami Heat on Nov. 1.

TENNIS

CHINA OPEN: Rafael Nadal kept alive his hopes of wresting the top ranking from Novak Djokovic by rallying for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Fabio Fognini in the quarterfinals at Beijing.

Djokovic, the defending champion, advanced with a 6-1, 6-2 win over American Sam Querrey in just 53 minutes.

In women’s play, top-ranked Serena Williams beat former No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki 6-1, 6-4.

JAPAN OPEN: Top-seeded Juan Martin del Potro of overcame Alexandr Dolgopolov 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to reach the semifinals at Tokyo.

The Argentine will face sixth-seeded Nicolas Almagro, who beat defending champion Kei Nishikori 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-3.

GOLF

LPGA: American Jessica Korda shot a 5-under 68 in Beijing to take a two-stroke lead after the second round of the smog-shrouded Reignwood Classic, the LPGA Tour’s first event in China.

Korda had a 14-under 132 total. China’s Shanshan Feng (64) and American Stacy Lewis (66) were tied for second.

AUTO RACING

INDYCAR: Chip Ganassi Racing added another Indianapolis 500 winner to its team and dropped Honda for Chevrolet in an engine manufacturer switch that seemed to be in the works since the start of the season.

Both moves could have a ripple effect throughout the IndyCar paddock.

KV Racing must now replace reigning Indianapolis 500 winner Tony Kanaan, who turned down an offer to return to the team that rescued him just before the start of the 2011 season when Kanaan didn’t have a ride. Kanaan chose instead to join Dario Franchitti, Scott Dixon and Charlie Kimball at Ganassi, which next year will field cars for five of the last seven Indy 500 winners.

TRACK AND FIELD

SUSPENSION: The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency says shot putter Jillian Camarena-Williams has accepted a six-month suspension after testing positive for Clomiphene, a prohibited hormone, in an out-of-competition test on July 1.

WORLD CUP: After all the talk about changing the dates of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, it will be another year or more before any decision is made.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter ordered “deep consultations” about shifting the tournament from the scorching summer heat in the Gulf country, saying a decision on the highly divisive issue might be delayed until 2015.
