BIDDEFORD (AP) — The American Civil Liberties Union of Maine says two Biddeford schools violated the U.S. Constitution by holding presentations that promoted religion.

The ACLU is asking the principals of the high school and middle school to apologize to students and faculty “for violating their First Amendment rights.”

The ACLU got involved when a parent complained about presentations last month by Life Choices Ministry.

The ACLU says the presentations included references to “Jesus Christ,” “God,” and “being killed for Christ,” graphic images of the Columbine High School massacre and promoted abstinence-only sexual education.

Superintendent Jeremy Ray said he is “sorry if anyone was offended.”

The principals have until Nov. 4 to respond to the ACLU or the organization will be “forced to pursue other avenues.”
