AUGUSTA — Maine’s secretary of state is warning residents about possible online scams concerning driver’s license renewals.

Matthew Dunlap said in a statement this week that Maine’s Bureau of Motor Vehicles has received some complaints about websites that purport to provide new driver’s licenses or renewals, but which charge customers and provide nothing.

The secretary’s office says residents can get driver’s licenses only through the BMV or AAA New England locations. Residents must establish proof of residency and legal presence before getting a license.

The bureau is encouraging those who think they may be a victim of a scam to contact the BMV Investigations Unit at 624-9000, ext. 52144.
