SOUTH PORTLAND – South Portland police are asking for the public’s help to track down two men who robbed a pair of sandwich shop employees at gunpoint Sunday night.

According to a press release issued Monday, two employees of the Amato’s shop at the corner of Broadway and Evans Street were leaving the store at 11:20 p.m. Sunday and were about to get into a car to drive away when they were approached by two men.

“One of the males produced a handgun, pointed it at the victims, and demanded cash,” wrote Police Department spokesman Sgt. Steve Webster.

The employees handed over “a small amount of cash” to the robbers, who then “fled on foot,” said Webster.

One of the robbers was described as being 6 feet tall, with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a black hoodie and a black bandana with “patches of white” on it. The second man was said to be about 5 feet, 10 inches tall, with a medium build. He was last seen wearing a white jacket and a white bandana.

Webster acknowledged that the descriptions are not a lot to go on. However, police are hopeful someone in the area of Broadway and Evans at the time in the incident may have seen something that can be used to help track down the salt-and-pepper bandits, having noticed two men walking in the area, one dressed in black, the other in white. Other potentially useful information could include seeing an unfamiliar vehicle parked on a side street in the area, police say, “or some other suspicious activity.”
