SMCC announces 2013 Hall of Fame inductees

Southern Maine Community College recently announced its 2013 Athletics Hall of Fame class. The class includes Mike Brown and Kelly Maloney. Brown, Class of 2001, was a men’s basketball star, who made the Maine Small College Conference All-Star team twice. Brown is currently 10th in program annals in average assists per game and 16th in all-time steals. Maloney, Class of 2007, was a women’s soccer standout, who ranks as the program’s all-time leader in career goals.
“Both inductees had outstanding careers while at SMCC and have made significant contributions and had success upon leaving the college,” said SMCC athletic director and men’s basketball coach Matt Richards. “Induction into the Athletics Hall of Fame is very fitting for them as they exemplify what we hope our current student-athletes will strive to become.”

SMCC wraps up fall season

Southern Maine Community College’s fall sports season is coming to a close this week. Baseball wound up 10-5 (5-3 in the Yankee Small College Conference) after a 7-6 loss to New Hampshire Technical Institute in the NECA semifinals. Softball finished 5-5 (3-4 in the conference) after a 6-0 loss to NHTI in the NECA semifinals. Men’s soccer took a 7-4-1 mark (6-2-1 in the conference) into Wednesday’s game at rival Central Maine CC. The Seawolves enjoyed wins at Northern Maine CC (3-1) and Eastern Maine CC (1-0) last weekend. SMCC finishes at home versus Unity Saturday. The women’s soccer squad was 3-4-3 (2-2-1 in the YSCC) entering Wednesday’s game versus CMCC. The Seawolves lost, 1-0, at the University of Maine-Presque Isle last weekend. SMCC closes at home with Unity Saturday. Golf will take part in the conference championship meet Saturday.

NAFSC skaters to compete at regional championships

Six North Atlantic Figure Skating Club skaters, based out of Falmouth, will take part in the New England Regional Championships this weekend in Newington, Conn. Morgan Sewall, 16, of Scarborough, will compete in the senior ladies event. Julia Gilman, 16, of Falmouth, will compete in the novice ladies event. Cape Elizabeth’s Patricia Janick, 14, Freeport’s Tessa Peredy, 15, and Isabel Peredy, 13, and Kennebunk’s Samantha Abelson, 14, will all take part in the intermediate ladies event. The event begins the qualifying competitive season which culminates in January with the U.S. Figure Skating National Championships.

St. Joe’s holding shooting clinic

St. Joseph’s College’s women’s basketball team will conduct a shooting clinic for girls in grades 3-9 Sunday, Nov. 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Harold Alfond Center on campus. The fee is $35 in advance or $45 the day of the clinic. FMI, 893-6671 or mikemcdevitt@sjcme.edu.
