On Nov. 5, South Portland voters will decide whether to approve a $14 million bond related to the so-called “Municipal Services Facility.” The actual cost of construction is $16 million, as the city will use $2 million in taxes already collected or to be collected. With interest of $6 million, the cost grows to $22 million for Phase 1 of the project. The city plans on adding another $5 million in costs in Phase 2 of this project, bringing the total cost to about $27 million.
There is no question that the public works facility on O’Neil Street needs to be replaced, but that can be done for about $3 million, so why is the city proposing a $27 million solution to a $3 million problem? Vote no on the bond; it contains more than $20 million in wasteful spending.
