Two Sanford High School seniors were charged with disorderly conduct this week after they escalated the rivalry between Sanford and Massabesic by leaving a sex toy and explicit note for students at the Waterboro high school.

The suspicious package was found at 7 a.m. Saturday inside Massabesic High School in Waterboro, the day after a football game between Sanford and Massabesic high schools was postponed because of a threat of violence.

The suspicious package, which was wrapped in Christmas paper, was labeled with a tag that read “To Massabesic from Sanford” and left outside of the athletic director’s office. Police who responded to investigate found the box contained a sex toy “and an explicit note describing what they could do with the toy,” Chief Deputy William King of the York County Sheriff’s Office said in a written release.

Massabesic School Resource Officer Jason Solomon on Tuesday was able to identify two suspects – one a juvenile and one an adult. Both are seniors at Sanford High School.

Solomon issued each suspect a summons for disorderly conduct, a class E misdemeanor. Isaac Sweeney, 18, of Springvale is expected to appear in court on Feb. 25, 2014. The juvenile was not identified.

“Both expressed remorse over the incident that they initially viewed as an innocent prank,” King said. “Neither suspect realized their prank would escalate to the level of a police investigation.”

Sweeney and the juvenile also face punishment from school officials.

Solomon was assisted in the investigation by school officials and Sanford School Resource Officer Michael Gordon.
