WINDHAM — After standing on the sidelines and watching her team play for 110 minutes, Elizabeth Mycock finally got a chance to step onto the field Saturday afternoon .

Windham’s backup keeper made the most of her opportunity.

Mycock stopped a penalty kick to help the top-seeded Eagles pull out a 1-0 win against Scarborough in a Western Class A girls’ soccer semifinal.

Windham Coach Deb Lebel inserted Mycock into the game in place of Kate Kneeland after the two teams battled to a scoreless tie through 80 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of overtime.

“Kate is a great goalie, good at PKs, but Liz is a just a little bit taller and sometimes her reaction time is just a little bit quicker on the PKs,” Lebel explained. “All the coaches agreed if it came down to (penalty kicks), Liz might be the better bet.”

The Eagles (15-0-1) secured the victory by outscoring the reigning Class A state champions 3-1 in penalty kicks.

“We’ve been practicing (penalty kicks) a lot over the past week, and I just had a lot of confidence in myself,” Mycock said. “I wasn’t so much nervous, I was just excited to get on the field and get my chance to prove myself.”

Jenna Soucy, Emily Gilman and Lauren Shoemaker converted penalty kicks for Windham. Katherine Kirk put in a kick for the Red Storm (12-2-2).

The Eagles held a 29-10 edge in shots, carrying play for much of the second half and the two 15-minute overtimes.

“I couldn’t be prouder of my kids,” Scarborough Coach Mike Farley said. “They really battled hard to the very end.”

Sydney Martin did all she could to keep the Red Storm in the game. She made 10 saves, and most were of the sensational variety.

Windham had the better scoring chances in the first half.

In the 21st minute, Holly Spencer made a run down the right side, but her shot hit the crossbar.

Two minutes later, Martin had to dive to keep a low shot by Soucy out of the net. Moments later, Martin punched Soucy’s hard shot from the right of the penalty area away from the goal.

“Sydney, her whole career, has made huge saves,” Farley said. “Time and time again, she is called upon and she makes the saves you wouldn’t believe she could make. We’re not in the game if she doesn’t make those saves.

“Not too much separates these teams. Unfortunately, this game came down to penalty kicks, and we came out on the short end.”
