READFIELD — When the Western Class C girls’ soccer tournament began, few would have expected Sacopee Valley to make it all the way to the regional final.

But that’s exactly where the 10th-seeded Hawks are headed after their third straight road victory, 1-0 in penalty kicks against No. 6 Maranacook on Saturday.

Sacopee Valley (9-8), a team comprised of 18 players who are freshmen or sophomores, will play for the regional title on Wednesday at fifth-seeded Waynflete, which knocked off top-ranked St. Dom’s 5-2.

“With three straight upsets to get to (the regional final), in the middle of the season we were working to get wins to get to the playoffs,” Sacopee Valley Coach Kevin Murphy said. “Now heading to (the regional final) is a pretty good finish to the season for us.

The teams were tied 0-0 after regulation and two 15-minute overtimes, sending the game to penalty kicks.

All four Sacopee Valley shooters – Brooke Totman, Jade Jordan, Courtney Ryan and Morgan Carpenter successfully converted their kicks, and Hawks keeper Madison Day made a diving save as Maranacook (7-6-4) missed twice on its four tries, including a shot over the crossbar.

“There was definitely pressure because our team had so much on our shoulders,” Carpenter said. “We were such the underdogs in this match and this finalized everything that we’ve been through.”
