PORTLAND — Dexter R. Hunneman Jr., 91, died in Portland Oct. 26.

He was born in Hamilton, Mass. He graduated from Amherst College in 1945.

During World War II, Hunneman served in the European Theatre, 56th Armored Infantry Battalion, 12th Armored Division and was awarded the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge, and two Unit Citations.

He was a vice president of the Canal Bank in Portland for 30 years, retiring in 1977. He was also treasurer and a director of the Maine Publicity Bureau for 25 years, treasurer and member of the Cape Elizabeth Fire Department Hose Co. No. 2 for 25 years, and treasurer of the Maine March of Dimes, serving as state chairman in 1970.

An avid golfer, Hunneman belonged to many golf clubs. He also enjoyed skiing, fly-fishing, and duck-hunting, and traveled extensively through five continents, a favorite destination in his later years being St. Martin. He was a member of the Portland Kiwanis Club and a member of the Cumberland Club for 40 years.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Damaris, of Portland, in 1999 on their 55th wedding anniversary.

He is survived by his wife, Alice P. Hunneman; sons Dexter R. Hunneman III and Robert D. Hunneman; daughters Damaris Fletcher and Melissa Seig; five grandchildren, Ewan, Robert, Elizabeth, Nicholas and James; and three great-grandchildren, Fergus, Hector and Charlie.

Funeral arrangements will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Maine Medical Center.
