American Legion Wants You

This is an open letter to all local veterans. The American Legion at the national and state level have been facing some serious challenges in membership as the last of the World War II veterans pass away.

Windham Field-Allen Post 148 has, however, seen consistent growth over the same period and would like to continue this trend Cumulatively, the Post membership totals 1145 years of service with most of its 100 members serving with the Post for less than eight years.

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veteran’s organization dedicated to veterans supporting veterans. In addition to veteran’s support the Legion has focused on support for our nation’s youth through programs such as Legion Baseball, Boys Nation and support for Boy Scout chapters. Field-Allen Post 148 in Windham has maintained consistent, dedicated service to veterans and the community since it was chartered in 1938 by a group of 25 local community leaders and World War I veterans. Today’s Post members continue to advocate for patriotism, support for fellow veterans and promotion of future leaders, our youth.

I am inviting all eligible veterans to come join us, to learn about our programs and help to support our most needy fellow veterans. Locally, Post 148 coordinates a wide range of social, informational and ceremonial events including our major project each year: coordinating and hosting the town’s Memorial Day activities. Events include the Memorial Day parade and Ceremony, placing the flags on the graves of all deceased veterans in the some 30 cemeteries around town, sponsoring a major food drive for the local food pantry and hosting an open house at the Windham Veterans Center. Additionally, the Post is responsible for the show of Americanism by placing some 100 flags on the roads and byways of the town. Youth support programs include scholarships for high school graduates; sponsoring Boys and Girls State and Nation attendees; and sponsoring the patriotic Oratorical contest.

Could we do more? The obvious answer is yes! But, to do more the Post needs more active support. That translates into new members willing to share their time, talent and ideas.

So, the question becomes, “how can I help?” First and foremost, be willing to commit to a few hours a month to serving veterans and the local community. Second, come visit a meeting. The Field-Allen Post meets on first Wednesdays of each month with a 5 p.m. social and dinner followed by a 6 p.m. business meeting at the Windham Veteran’s Center (behind Big Lots in North Windham). Come check us out. We are not all work and no play. The Post sponsors so many great social events as well including; bean suppers, a fall pig roast and a great St Patrick’s Day dinner in the spring.
