TOPSHAM — An Alna man was taken to a Brunswick hospital after crashing his car into a utility pole on Route 196 Tuesday night.

The crash was reported at 5:50 p.m.

Topsham police Lt. Fred Dunn said William Dunning, 25, of Alna was driving a 2007 Pontiac east on Route 196 when his car left the roadway and struck a utility pole at the corner of Ivanhoe Drive. The car broke the utility pole in half and left live wires hanging, Dunn said.

Dunning was transported to Mid Coast Hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. Topsham Fire and Rescue responded, along with Central Maine Power Co. to replace the pole. The car sustained substantial front-end damage and was towed from the scene.
