WATERVILLE — Megan Fortier’s power-play goal with 8:28 left in the game was the difference as Colby defeated Southern Maine 1-0 in a women’s hockey game Tuesday night.

Kat Mackey’s shot was deflected downward by Fortier and the puck trickled over the goal line for the goal. Mackey and Natalie Fischer had assists on the play.

Brianne Wheeler stopped 27 shots for Colby (3-2). Jenn Fuller had 30 saves for the Huskies (5-2).

 

BOWDOIN 2, UMASS-BOSTON 1: Ariana Bourque scored twice in the game’s final 6:27 to give Bowdoin (1-2) a victory over the Beacons (1-6-1) in Boston.

Lan Crofton had 26 saves for the Polar Bears.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

SOUTHERN MAINE 74, BATES 54: Erin McNamara and Abby Hasson scored 10 points each, and Rebecca Knight nine, while leading the Huskies (3-2) to a 42-29 halftime lead over Bates (3-3) in Gorham.

McNamara finished with 15 points for USM, while Hasson had 14 and Knight 13. Meredith Kelly scored 20 for the Bobcats, and Allaina Murphy added 10.

 

SMCC 89, UM-AUGUSTA 60: Danielle McCusker scored 20 points to lead Southern Maine C.C. to a win at Augusta.

Esther Palmieri added 15 points for the winners (6-2). Jenn Lola led UMA (4-4) with 24 points while Jamie Plummer added 19.

REGIS 75, COLBY 62: Regis College (1-2) shot 51 percent from the field on the way to a nonconference win over the Mules (3-3) at Waterville.

Desi Smith led Colby with 15 points, six rebounds and a pair of assists.

 

BOWDOIN 64, UNE 59: Sara Binkhorst drained a 3-pointer with 3:21 left to play, giving the Polar Bears (5-0) a 56-54 lead over UNE (4-1) in Brunswick.

Binkhorst added another 3-pointer, and two free throws in the final seconds, as Bowdoin closed with an 11-5 run.

Binkhorst finished with 23 points while Alanna Vose scored 18 for the Nor’easters.

 

MEN’S BASKETBALL

BATES 79, USM 68: Graham Stafford’s 18 points paced Bates (5-1) as the Bobcats used a balanced offense to beat the Huskies (3-2) in Gorham.

Mike Boornazian added 17 for Bates, while Billy Selmon added 12, Sean Cunningham 11 and Adam Philpott 11.

Conor Sullivan’s 16 points led Southern Maine. Cole Libby and James Odneal each added 13, and Tyler Penney had 12.

FISHER 72, UNE 53: The Falcons (4-5) used a strong inside game to win at Lynn, Mass., outrebounding the Nor’easters, 55-35.

Justin Pollard led UNE scoring with 14 points while Devin Thompson added 13.

USM 6, SALEM STATE 5: Angelo Vrachnas scored his third goal of the game 49 seconds into overtime to give the Huskies (4-3) a come-from-behind victory over Salem State (3-3) in Gorham.

 

BOWDOIN 9, UNE 3: Bowdoin Coach Terry Meagher watched the Polar Bears (2-2-1) erupt for five power-play goals in the third period to dispatch the University of New England (2-5-1) in Biddeford.

The win made Meagher the sixth coach in Division III history to reach 500 career wins.

SOFTBALL

BATES: McKell Barnes has been hired as the new head coach. Barnes has served as an assistant coach at Bowdoin since 2012, and has coached with the Maine Thunder travel softball program.

Barnes was the 2009 North Atlantic Conference Player of the Year at UM-Farmington, as well as the Beavers’ Female Athlete of the Year in 2011.

She graduated from UMF with a bachelor’s degree in education in May 2011, and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in sports leadership from Northeastern University.
