Courthouse Gallery Fine Art, 6 Court St. in Ellsworth, will hold a holiday open house for its “Small Works” show from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday.

The exhibit, which runs through Dec. 24, features work from more than a dozen Maine artists, including R. Scott Baltz, Judy Belasco, Ragna Bruno, June Grey, Philip Frey, Paul Hannon, William Irvine, Joseph Keiffer, Rosie Moore, Ed Nadeau and Linda Packard.

The gallery’s website describes Baltz as a landscape painter, who uses oils to create “an intimate sensation of a world untouched by humanity. His paintings have no evidence of people, structures or industry. Rather, viewers finds themselves alone and at peace in his compositions, in a way more soothing than lonesome, more animated than abandoned,” the website said.

Frey is known for his vibrant paintings of Maine’s landscape. His joyful interpretations of color and light include seascapes, landscapes and Maine’s working waterfront.

Another artist in the exhibit, Linda Packard, paints en plein air and brings a sensuous physicality to her visceral landscapes. She prefers painting natural environments and is known for exploring Down East Maine on foot or by kayak in search of inspiration.

The works in the show can be viewed at facebook.com/courthousegallery.

The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Call 667-6611 or go to courthousegallery.com.
