I am a retired computer engineer. I have no special knowledge of petroleum, and I don’t get to vote on any new “waterfront protection” South Portland may come up with. I don’t want new pollution in my backyard, but I recognize that change will come, and often from unexpected directions. If you had enforced something like the recently proposed ordinance since Civil War days, we would still be riding horses – and complaining about the depth of pollution in the city streets. (We didn’t buy into the automobile as a way to reduce pollution, but it has helped. We traded an uncontrollable source for one we can keep improving through technology.) So if you produce a new ordinance, try not to cut off our future in dealing with the problems of today.
