A 77-year-old Scarborough man who was seriously injured when he accidentally shot himself at the Scarborough Fish & Game Club firing range Saturday is recovering from surgery to repair his wound at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Scarborough Police Sgt. Timothy Barker said Everett Boynton was expected to recover from his injury but faces a long recovery. Boynton’s condition was not available from the hospital Sunday.

Boynton was alone at the range at 79 Holmes Road in Scarborough when he shot himself in the abdomen with a .22 caliber handgun at 10:55 a.m. Barker said Boynton managed to call the police and report the accident.
