WATERVILLE — Maine lawmakers are touring an early education center that primarily serves low-income children.
The Education Committee is visiting Educare Central Maine in Waterville on Wednesday.
Democratic Sen. Rebecca Millett of South Portland, co-chair of the committee, says touring the facility will allow the committee to see how quality early education programs can be implemented in other communities.
The committee is examining a bill that would expand pre-kindergarten programs to all of Maine’s roughly 160 school districts. Currently more than 60 percent of districts have pre-kindergarten programs.
Educare, which serves about 200 children, is a partnership between the city’s public schools, the Kennebec Valley Community Action Early/Head Start program and philanthropic groups.
