YORK — In a rematch of last year’s Western Class B girls basketball final, defending champ Lake Region showed it’s clearly ahead of longtime rival York at this juncture of the season.
The veteran Lakers took their show on the road for the first time this season and beat York, 57-27. The Wildcats are extremely young (seven sophomores, three freshmen) and are without their top scorer, sophomore Shannon Todd, who is out with mononucleosis.
Lake Region returning guards Sarah Hancock and younger sister CeCe Hancock combined with all-state senior center Tiana-Jo Carter and senior forward Jordan Turner to suffocate the Wildcats’ offense, forcing 25 first-half turnovers en route to a 32-11 halftime lead.
Sarah Hancock (team-high 13 points) helped push the offensive pace in the third quarter, scoring five points, as the Lakers pushed the lead to 49-13.
At that point both teams went deep into their benches. Carter and CeCe Hancock both had eight points.
Lake Region won last year’s Western Maine final, 50-24.
