PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired closer Addison Reed from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for third base prospect Matt Davidson.

Reed, who turns 25 later this month, ranked fifth in the American League and seventh overall in the majors with 40 saves last season. In 68 appearances, he went 5-4 with a 3.79 ERA and had eight blown saves. He walked 23 and struck out 72. Opponents batted .215 against the right-hander.

The 22-year-old Davidson made his major league debut last season, appearing in 31 games with Arizona. He hit .237 with three homers. In 115 games with Triple-A Reno last year, Davidson hit .280 with 32 doubles, 17 homers and 74 RBIs.

Arizona selected Davidson in the first round of the 2009 draft, the 35th selection overall.

RED SOX: Right fielder Shane Victorino underwent surgery to release a nerve in his right thumb and is expected to be ready for spring training.

He hit .294 with 15 homers, 61 RBIs and 21 stolen bases in his first season with Boston.

INDIANS: Free agent pitcher Shaun Marcum, 32, who was limited to 14 games for the Mets before undergoing shoulder surgery, signed a minor league contract that includes an invitation to spring training.

ROYALS: Omar Infante, who hit .318 with 10 homers and 51 RBI in 118 games with Detroit this past season, agreed to a $30.25 million, four-year contract to become Kansas City’s primary second baseman.

TWINS: Right-hander Mike Pelfrey has agreed to an $11 million, two-year contract.

Pelfrey, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2012 as a Met, was 5-13 with a 5.19 ERA for the Twins in 2013.

CARDINALS: Free-agent second baseman Mark Ellis signed a one-year, $5.25 million contract with St. Louis after playing last season with the Dodgers.

BRAVES: Right-hander Gavin Floyd agreed to a $4 million, one-year deal, but the question is when he’ll be ready to pitch.

The 30-year-old had arm surgery in May which ended his seventh season with the White Sox.

CUBS: Left-hander Wesley Wright, 28, agreed to a one-year contract worth $1,425,000.

Wright, a reliever, was 0-4 with a 3.69 ERA in 70 games last season for Houston and Tampa Bay.

ROCKIES: Left-handed reliever Boone Logan agreed to a $16.5 million, three-year deal with Colorado.

He was 5-2 with a 3.23 ERA in 2013 with the Yankees.

FEE CAPPED: Major League Baseball and Nippon Professional Baseball finalized a new posting system that caps the fee for players at $20 million, a deal that may lead to star pitcher Masahiro Tanaka going on the market.
