BRUNSWICK

A special group of rescued puppies has made it to the Coastal Humane Society, from Puerto Rico, just in time for Christmas.

To help them get home for the holidays, shelter staff and volunteers are offering to deliver puppies to homes on Christmas Day.

Fourteen puppies will move up to the adoption floor at noon Sunday, Dec. 22, when adopters can come in and pick their puppy.

Adopters must meet the dog in person before adopting.

After picking their pup, adopters have the option of going home with the puppy after adoption, picking up at a later time, or for a $50 delivery donation, having the dog delivered to their home on Christmas Day.

They’ll also go home with a collar and leash, kibble, a stocking, and a present for under the tree.

Proceeds from delivery donations will go toward future similar rescues — saving dogs from high-risk shelters.

The adoption fee for these puppies is $299 and covers the spay/neuter surgery, Lyme and heartworm tests, preventative heartworm treatment, rabies, distemper and bordatella vaccinations, flea/tick and deworming treatments and other medical attention as needed.

At the time of adoption, shelter officials said adopters can expect a conversation with an adoption counselor to make sure the dog and household are a good fit for each other.

If the puppy is to be a gift within the same household. both the giver and recipient of the gift should be mindful of the financial, emotional and time concerns involved in pet ownership.

Potential adopters are asked to consider specific questions such as: Who can provide the dog with daily exercise? Who will be primarily responsible for the dog? Will the dog be alone for long periods of time? Is there enough space for the dog? Are there any allergies in the family? Are there other pets in the home? Are you financially prepared to care for a dog, which can cost $100 per month or more?

Additionally, to help make sure that these pups get off on the right paw, the shelter will offer adopters $25 off every obedience class at the facility.

Puppy Kindergarten and Basic Obedience classes begin in January; both classes last six weeks and are rolling admission.

The shelter also offers Christmas delivery for cats and adult dogs, too.

Gift certificates for adoptable animals are also available, and make a great gift for anyone looking for a forever friend, and can cover partially or in full the adoption of any animal.
