CUMBERLAND — Greely beat Falmouth for the first time in three years Saturday but had to go to overtime to do it.

Greely opened overtime with a 10-1 run and held on for a 57-53 victory in a game between unbeaten Western Maine Conference teams.

“Falmouth is a great team and we knew we could compete with them,” said Connor Hanley of Greely, who hit a 3-pointer from the left corner with 4.5 seconds in regulation to make it 43-43. “It was good we could beat them because it shows us that we can play with anybody.”

The Rangers (6-0) held a 32-18 halftime lead but Falmouth, in its first Western Class A season after winning the Class B state title, outscored them 25-11 in the second half.

“Unfortunately we haven’t been tested most of the season and it sort of grabbed us right there,” Falmouth Coach Dave Halligan said. “We thought we could go out and do what we wanted to do, but that was a very good team out there.

“I thought we were passive. We’ve been playing down to the level of some of these teams, and you have to have a good steady diet of competition to keep your edge. We can make some of those mistakes against some of the other teams we’ve played but you can’t do that against (Greely).”

Falmouth (5-1) put together a 20-2 run over 9:45 to take a 43-38 lead with 3:10 left in regulation.

“Once we got back into doing what we were capable of doing, it was better,” Halligan said. “We made a couple of youthful mistakes coming down the stretch, which made a difference, but we didn’t quit and I was pleased to see that. We played right to the end.”

After blowing its 14-point lead, Greely regained late momentum.

“We lost a lot of energy in the third quarter but we got it back in the last couple minutes in the fourth quarter and carried it on into overtime,” said Bailey Train of Greely

Mike McDevitt and Hanley led the Rangers with 13 points each. Train followed with 11 and Kyle Wood scored 10.

“(Greely is) a good veteran team, and all their seniors stepped up for them,” Halligan said.

Jack Simonds scored a game-high 20 points for Falmouth. Thomas Coyne, a sophomore point guard, added 18.
