Every year we rave about the drama produced by local high school sports athletes, then the calendar flips and they go out and raise the bar another notch.

That was certainly the case in 2013.

From start to finish.

With another winter season underway and the calendar now reading 2014, here’s one final look back at the thrills that made up 2013.

Winter

Last basketball season saw the Hyde girls enjoy a fantastic year, going 16-1 in the regular year, then reaching the Western D semifinals before losing to Richmond. In Eastern A, Mt. Ararat made it to the semifinals before finishing 16-4 after a loss to eventual regional champion Bangor in that semifinal round. Brunswick (2-16) and Morse (5-13) failed to make the playoffs.

The Hyde boys’ team won its first 10 games and made it to the Western D semifinals before a loss to old nemesis Valley ended its at 15-4. In Eastern A, Brunswick was ousted in the quarterfinals by Lawrence to finish 10-9. Mt. Ararat got in as the No. 9 seed and got to the quarterfinals before losing to Hampden Academy, to finish 8-12. In Western B, Morse made the playoffs, but lost to Wells in the preliminary round to wind up 7-12.

Brunswick’s boys’ hockey team finished 11-8-1 after a loss to eventual regional champion Lewiston in the semifinals. Mt. Ararat just missed the playoffs with a 7-11 mark. On the girls’ side, Brunswick also made the playoffs, but wound up 8-12 after losing to eventual champion Greely in the East Region semifinals. Mt. Ararat’s inaugural varsity season ended at 0-18.

The Class A state track meet saw Brunswick’s boys place sixth, behind individual wins from Alex Nichols in both the 200 and 400, while the girls came in fifth. Mt. Ararat placed 16th on the boys’ side and didn’t score in the girls’ meet.

There was plenty of excitement in the pool as well as the Brunswick girls were runners-up. The Dragons produced individual champions Jessica Russell in the 200 freestyle and Lynsie Russell in the 500 free, while Mt. Ararat got wins from Celia Ouellette in both the 50 and 100 free. In the boys’ state meet, Brunswick was sixth, Morse 13th and Mt. Ararat did not score.

In wrestling, Brunswick was 12th in Class A, while Mt. Ararat tied for 15th. The Dragons got a win from Jared Jensen at 170 pounds. Morse came in ninth in Class B.

Spring

In the spring, success continued.

On the baseball diamond, Morse reached the semifinals before dropping a thriller to defending Class B champion Falmouth. Brunswick was ousted in extra innings of an Eastern A prelim.

Brunswick’s boys’ lacrosse team got to the regional final, where it dropped a painful decision to Cheverus. Mt. Ararat was upset by Deering in the quarterfinals. Morse got to the Western B quarterfinals, but lost to Maranacook.

On the girls’ side, Morse enjoyed the best season in its history, reaching the Eastern B Final before losing to Yarmouth. Mt. Ararat lost to eventual Class A champion Cheverus in the quarterfinals, while reigning regional champion Brunswick was also ousted in that round, by Messalonskee.

The outdoor track and field state meet produced several memorable performances.

Brunswick’s girls’ tennis team won yet another championship. Several other squads took part in the playoffs.

Fall

There was plenty excitement this fall as well. 

Brunswick had the most success in football, making it to the Eastern Class B Final before losing to Cony. In Western B, Mt. Ararat completed its rise back to contention by making the playoffs and Morse also took part in the postseason.

In girls’ soccer, Mt. Ararat reached the Eastern A Final before losing to Bangor. Brunswick also fell to Bangor (in the semifinals). Morse also made it to the playoffs, falling to York in the Western B quarterfinals.

On the boys’ side, Mt. Ararat lost to Hampden Academy in the semifinals, while Brunswick was ousted by Bangor in the quarterfinals.

Mt. Ararat was the lone field hockey squad to make it to the postseason, falling to Messalonskee in the quarterfinals.

Cross country saw several strong performances. The Brunswick girls led the way with a fourth place state meet finish.

Golf featured Brunswick making it to the state match, where it tied for ninth.

Winter

Another winter season is in full swing.

On the hardwood, Morse’s boys’ team is stealing the show with a 7-0 run. Brunswick (4-2), Mt. Ararat (3-4) and Hyde (3-0) will also be in the hunt for the playoffs. Brunswick (5-1) is leading the way on the girls’ side. Mt. Ararat (0-6), Morse (2-5) and Hyde (1-2) look to make noise as well.

On the ice, Brunswick (3-2) and Mt. Ararat (3-3) are off to competitive starts on the boys’ side, while the Brunswick (2-6) and Mt. Ararat (1-7) girls have some work to do if they hope to contend.
