BATH — Police searched a wooded area near Nichols Street amid blizzard conditions in the early morning on Jan. 3 for a reportedly suicidal man before finding him and taking him to Mid Coast Hospital.
The 28-year-old Bath man told a third party that he wanted to hurt himself, according to a release from Bath Police Chief Michael Field.
After receiving that information, officers checked the man’s Washington Street apartment at about 12:30 a.m. and discovered he had left the residence at about midnight.
Police searched the immediate area, and Officer Chuck Reece discovered what appeared to be tracks at the end of Nichols Street. Reece and Officer Mark Steele followed the tracks, while Woolwich Fire Department personnel tracked the man on an all-terrain vehicle.
Officers found the man about a mile into the woods, partially asleep but responsive and complaining of cold feet, according to Field. Woolwich firefighters took the man and officers back to Nichols Street, then Bath EMS took him to Mid Coast Hospital.
“It is clear to me that if the officers didn’t follow the tracks and find this man, he may have not made it through this very difficult weather and night,” Field said.
The man’s condition was not immediately available.
