FSU finishes No. 1 in final AP poll
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Florida State is No. 1 in the final Associated Press college football poll, ending the Southeastern Conference’s record streak of seven national championships.
The Seminoles received all 60 first-place votes from the media panel after beating Auburn 34-31 in the BCS championship game on Monday night in the Rose Bowl. Michigan State was third, followed by South Carolina and Missouri. Oklahoma finished sixth and Alabama was No. 7.
Baylor’s Seastrunk to skip senior season
WACO, Texas (AP) — Big 12 rushing champ Lache Seastrunk is bypassing his senior season at Baylor to enter the NFL draft.
The Oregon transfer played two seasons at Baylor, and was the first player in school history with two 1,000-yard rushing seasons.
Mannion returning to Oregon State
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion is returning for his senior season.
Before making his decision, he consulted the NFL Draft Advisory Board and was projected as a third-round selection.
Mannion set a Pac-12 season record for passing yards with 4,662 and threw an Oregon State-record 37 touchdown passes, third-most for a single season in conference history.
Hundley to stay at UCLA
LOS ANGELES (AP) — UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley has decided to return to the Bruins for his junior season.
Hundley has started for the last two seasons under coach Jim Mora, winning 19 games and establishing himself as one of the nation’s top young quarterbacks with his arm and his legs.
Rodman plans ”˜birthday’ game for Kim
PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — Dennis Rodman said the game he and other former NBA players are planning in North Korea will be a “birthday present” for leader Kim Jong Un.
Rodman’s squad ”“ featuring ex-All Stars Kenny Anderson, Cliff Robinson and Vin Baker ”“ will play against a team of North Koreans on Wednesday, which is believed to be Kim’s birthday. The former NBA players, who arrived in Pyongyang on Monday, also include Eric “Sleepy” Floyd, guard Doug Christie and Charles D. Smith, who played for the New York Knicks. Four streetball players also are on the squad.
Rodman told The Associated Press he was glad to be in North Korea for the game, though he said he has gotten death threats for his repeated visits. He said proceeds from the game would go to a charity for the deaf in North Korea.
Dolphins cut ties with OC Sherman
MIAMI (AP) — Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman was fired in the first change by the team since missing the playoffs because of a late-season collapse.
Coach Joe Philbin defended Sherman the day after the season, but owner Stephen Ross was expected to demand some sort of shake-up following the dismal finish. Sherman joined the Dolphins when Philbin was hired two years ago, and the two have been close for more than 30 years.
