Cape, Scarborough linemen up for Gaziano Award

Cape Elizabeth’s Caelan Houle and Scarborough’s Michael Pino are defensive semifinalists for the Frank J. Gaziano Lineman Award, given in memory of the founder of National Distributors of South Portland and a former college All-American and professional player. Five others are finalists on the defensive side and eight offensive players are also up for the award. The winners will be named Jan. 25 in Augusta.

Local kids win free throw contest

Scarborough’s Nick Fiorillo and South Portland’s Mekhi Bitjoka, Margaret Flaherty, Andrew Heffernan won their respective age divisions at Sunday’s Elks Hoop Shoot at McAuley High School. Flaherty won the girls’ 8 and 9 age group. Heffernan was the boys’ winner in that age category. Bitjoka won the boys’ 10 and 11 age group. Fiorillo won the boys’ 12 and 13 division. The four advanced to the district shoot-off Sunday in Rockland.

Swish-Out Cancer Challenge upcoming

The 20th annual Dr. Noel Paradise Memorial Swish-Out and Junior Swish-Out Childhood Cancer Challenge will be held Sunday, Jan. 26 at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham. The tournament is a three-on-three, co-ed, double elimination event open to adults 18 and older. The entry is fee is $100 per team and all funds raised go directly to the Maine Children’s Cancer Program. There will also be a Junior Swish-Out open to middle school students. Entry fee is $75.
