NORTH YARMOUTH — Rep. Anne Graham, D-North Yarmouth, is among sponsors of a bill to restore funding for an HIV education program.

The Maine HIV Education and Prevention program has operated for more than 20 years to help prevent HIV infection in Maine teens, according to a state House Majority Office press release. The program, which recently lost funding, also aims to reduce teen pregnancy and teen STD infection rates.

“By investing in programs like MHEP, Maine ends up saving money in the long run,” Graham said in a statement. “If we want to grow Maine’s economy in a fiscally responsible way, we shouldn’t cut funding programs that actually save the taxpayers and the state money.”

The Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs will hold a public hearing on the bill in the weeks to come.
