This afternoon will see snow, heavy at times continuing across much of southern Maine.  The further north and west you are from the coastal plain the lighter the snow will be.  A very vigorous piece of energy moving up along the coast is creating a heavy pocket of snow.  This snow will come down quite hard at times making roads snow covered and causing slow travel.

The snow will continue until around 7-9 this evening before ending.  Generally, less than 5 inches will fall, however, there is going to be some towns which see 6 inch totals or perhaps slightly more. The most likely areas will be in interior York and Cumberland Counties.

As the snow ends this evening, it’s going to turn cold and the roads will become quite icy if they are not treated.

Sunday will feature a blend of clouds and a few sunny breaks.  There is still the risk of snow showers, but I am not expecting any accumulation.  Dry and sunny weather is on tap for Monday, MLK Day.

The arctic air comes back with a vengeance for the rest of the week.  Daytime temperature readings remain in the teens and night time lows heading near or below zero are going to make our January thaw a pleasant memory very quickly.

There is a chance of more snow later next week, but the models are having a rough time with the evolving pattern and I have low confidence in the timing and strength of any storms right now.
