There are a lot of chili cook-offs held in Maine throughout the year, for both amateurs and restaurateurs.
Here’s a look at the ones we could track down for 2014:
FEB. 9
Altrusa’s Great Chili & Chowder Challenge
Holiday Inn by the Bay, 88 Spring St., Portland
12:30 to 3 p.m.
Sample dozens of chilis and chowders from southern Maine chefs, and vote for your favorites.
Tickets are $20 in advance or $23 at the door. Preview tickets that get you in an hour early are $35.

MARCH 22
13th annual Chili Chowder Challenge
Augusta Armory, 179 Western Ave., Augusta
11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Taste test chilis from 12 to 15 local restaurants and caterers, and vote for the best. Event includes live and silent auctions, live music, crafts, children’s activities and a snack bar. All proceeds go to the Children’s Center: Early Intervention and Family Support.

MARCH 30
24th annual Eat the Heat Chili Cook-off & Firefighters’ Race
White Cap Base Lodge, Sunday River Resort, Newry
10 a.m.
Watch firefighters race down the mountain to raise money for Maine Handicapped Skiing, then sample chili from the best cooks in the state as they vie for the Best Chili Cook prize.
