WATERVILLE — Patrick Stewart scored 25 points, and the Colby men’s basketball team rallied to an 80-75 upset of defending national champion Amherst at Wadsworth Gymnasium Friday night, ending a 25-game conference winning streak for the Jeffs.

Sam Willson added 14 points, Chris Hudnut had 13 points, six rebounds and six assists, and Ryan Jann had 10 points and eight boards as the Mules’ balanced attack proved too much for Amherst to defend.

Colby (10-8, 2-4 NESCAC) faced a 41-34 halftime deficit, but used a 9-0 run to tie it at 56 with 11:21 remaining. A layup by Hudnut with 5:11 left put the Mules up 64-63 and kick-started an 11-0 run.

Aaron Toomey scored 26 points for Amherst (16-3, 5-1).

BOWDOIN 46, TRINITY 39: John Swords had 11 points, six rebounds and four blocks as the Polar Bears (17-1, 5-1) held off the Bantams (11-8, 3-3) at Brunswick.

Andrew Madlinger added nine points and seven boards for Bowdoin, which scored its fewest points in a victory since a 42-33 win over the University of Maine in 1949.

The Polar Bears led 21-17 at the half, then opened the second with an 8-2 run. Trinity never got closer than five afterward.

WESLEYAN 76, BATES 70: The Bobcats (10-8,1-4 NESCAC) rallied from 14 points down in the final four minutes but lost to the Cardinals (8-10, 2-3) in overtime at Middletown, Conn.

Bates was led by Mike Boornazian, who had 22 points and hit all nine of his free throws.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

WESLEYAN 72, BATES 59: Jenna Klaes scored a game-high 20 points as the Cardinals (12-6, 3-2 NESCAC) prevailed over the Bobcats (7-2, 0-5) in Middletown, Conn.

Meredith Kelley led four Bates players in double figures with 15 points.

AMHERST 67, COLBY 44: Ali Doswell had 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Jeffs (18-2, 5-1 NESCAC) past the Mules (6-13, 0-6) at Waterville.

Jaimie Renner and Meredith Doswell chipped in 13 points apiece for Amherst, which used a 15-0 run late in the first half to open a 31-13 lead.

Carylanne Wolfington scored 12 points for Colby.

BOWDOIN 59, TRINITY 46: Sara Binkhorst scored a game-high 17 points and Megan Phelps added 15 points and nine rebounds as the 19th-ranked Polar Bears (18-2, 5-1) pulled away from the Bantams (10-8, 3-3) in a NESCAC game at Brunswick.

Leading 28-20 at halftime, Bowdoin broke the game open with a 25-4 run at the start of the second half.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

NORWICH 4, USM 0: Tori Charron had two power-play goals and an assist to lead the Cadets (16-3, 11-0 ECAC East) over the Huskies (9-10-1, 6-5) in Norwich, Conn.

USM goaltender Liz Bergstrom had 29 saves in a losing cause.

TRINITY 4, COLBY 1: Emma Tani scored the go-ahead goal at 12:53 of the second period and Cheeky Herr added two goals in the third as the Bantams (9-5-3, 4-4-1 NESCAC) downed the Mules (5-9-2, 3-7-1) at Hartford, Conn.

Abby Ostrom also scored for Trinity. Jess Barkley scored Colby’s lone goal.

WILLIAMS 4, BOWDOIN 2: Hannah Beattie collected a goal and an assist while Gabrielle Vukasin added two assists as the Ephs (10-6-1, 7-1-1) scored three third-period goals to rally past the Polar Bears (8-7-2, 3-4-2) in a NESCAC game played at Brunswick.

Bowdoin took the lead 4:30 into the game on a power-play goal by Mallory Andrews. The Ephs came back to tie the game 7:11 into the second period.

Bowdoin regained the lead on a goal by Chelsea MacNeil with six seconds left in the second period.

MEN’S HOCKEY

USM 6, UNE 2: Kelby Lorenz scored a pair of goals to pace the Huskies (5-11-5, 4-8-2 ECAC East) over the Nor’easters (8-12-1, 5-9-0) in Biddeford.

USM scored four goals in the second period to take control of the contest.

Ryan Seward had three assists for the Huskies.
