GILFORD, N.H. — A public hearing has been scheduled on the future of a crumbling castle in New Hampshire’s Lakes region.
The Board of Selectmen last year approved demolition by its owner, Kimball Castle Properties LLC. At the same time, they urged those opposed to demolition to submit a petition warrant article for this year’s Town Meeting, but none was filed by the deadline.
The Citizen reports the selectmen say rather than invest town resources into saving the castle, they desire to allow the structure to be torn down safely.
The medieval-styled castle was built in the late 1890s by Benjamin Ames Kimball, who was president of the Boston, Montreal and Concord railways.
The hearing on Kimball Castle is scheduled for Feb. 26 at Gilford Town Hall.
