Cony quarterback Lucas agrees to attend UMaine

Ben Lucas, the record-setting Cony High quarterback who won the Fitzpatrick Trophy as the state’s top senior football player last fall, announced that he plans to sign a letter of intent Wednesday to play for the University of Maine.

NCAA rules prohibit college coaches from commenting on a recruit until the school receives a letter of intent. The football signing period begins Wednesday.

Lucas said he will receive a half athletic scholarship with the opportunity for more financial assistance.

He had narrowed his choices to Maine, Assumption and Bryant.

“Maine was where I wanted to go,” Lucas said. “I grew up rooting for Maine. When they offered it was hard to say no.”

Lucas led Cony to the Class B state championship with a come-from-behind 30-23 victory over Kennebunk. He threw for 307 yards and three touchdowns in the second half alone, rallying his team from a 16-0 deficit late in the third quarter.

He passed for 3,357 yards and 41 touchdowns as a senior, and finished his career with state records of 89 touchdowns and 7,575 yards.
