A Casco native is featured in a new Weather Channel reality series chronicling life at the Coast Guard’s Cape Disappointment station in Ilwaco, Wash.
Nick D’Ascanio, 25, a 2006 graduate of Lake Region High School and a 2007 graduate of Bridgton Academy, appears in several of the nine episodes of the show, which premiered at 10 p.m. Sunday.
D’Ascanio said about half of the roughly 30 people on duty at the station Sunday night planned to watch the show.
“We are all pretty excited,” he said.
The station oversees the mouth of the Columbia River and one of the most dangerous sandbars in the world. The station conducts 450 to 500 search and rescue operations a year.
D’Ascanio, a maritime enforcement specialist, joined the Coast Guard in 2008. He said the Weather Channel is deciding whether to return to Cape Disappointment for a second season. If it does, D’Ascanio probably won’t be in it since he is getting out of the Coast Guard later this year and returning to Maine. He said he hopes to enroll at the University of Maine and study aviation.
He is the son of Lucky and Mike D’Ascanio of Casco.
Clips of the show are available at the Weather Channel website at www.weather.com.
