WISCASSET — Old Orchard Beach had a lead early, and a chance to lead late, but came up short as No. 8 Wiscasset held off the ninth-seeded Seagulls for a 66-59 victory in a Western Class C boys basketball preliminary game on Wednesday night.

The Seagulls held a 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter, but trailed heading into both halftime and the fourth quarter.

The deficit at the end of the third quarter was just 43-30, however, and OOB had a chance to take the lead back midway through the final period. But a missed layup kept the score at 49-49 before the Wolverines went on a 5-0 run to seal their place in the quarterfinal round.

“We had our chances, but every time we got close they had an answer,” said Old Orchard Beach head coach John Regan, who led the Seagulls to their sixth-straight playoff appearance.

Joey Gildard scored a game-high 27 points in what was his final high school game. Fellow senior Tyler Scott finished with nine points, while Eric Hogan and Zach Hirst added six points apiece.

The Wolverines were led by Travis Padilla with 23 points, and Brandon Sprague and Matt Craig also finished in double digits, with 13 and 10, respectively.
