PORTLAND (AP) — A Portland clinic that provides health care for the homeless is closing after losing its federal funding.
The closing of the city-run Health Care for Homeless Clinic will put dozens of people out of work and potentially leave hundreds of homeless people without access to regular health care. The clinic serves 2,300 people per year.
The $680,000 federal grant that provided about a third of the clinic’s $1.8 million annual budget expires in April. The grant was awarded this year to an alternative nonprofit clinic, the Portland Community Health Center, but officials are concerned that the health center can only pick up some of the slack.
City Manager Mark Rees tell the Portland Press Herald the city’s clinic cannot operate even in a reduced capacity without the federal money.
