BRUNSWICK — Senior Jonathan Dunnett won two individual events to lead Greely to a fifth straight Class B boys’ state swimming and diving championship Tuesday afternoon.
Despite scoring in only 10 of the meet’s 12 events, the Rangers took the lead for good after the 100-yard freestyle, with five events remaining, and held off Morse High of Bath for a 289-263 victory at Gleason Pool on the campus of Bowdoin College.
Cape Elizabeth edged Camden Hills and Mt. Desert Island by one point for third, with 196, in a 26-team meet truncated from its usual morning trials and evening finals by a snowy weather forecast.
Dunnett, named Performer of the Meet, was the 200 individual medley in 1 minute, 57.14 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 52.30, both school records.
Greely senior Jack Benoit won the 100 backstroke in 56.05 and, with classmates Griffin Fluet, Connor Russell and Dunnett, the opening 200 medley relay.
A snowy weather forecast caused the Maine Principals’ Association to cancel the evening finals and instead turn the morning trials into timed finals.
Originally scheduled to swim at 10 a.m. and return for finals at 7 p.m., Class B teams instead held the entire meet Tuesday morning and early afternoon.
