Wrestlers from 20 schools all over Maine gathered at Noble High School in North Berwick on Saturday, Feb. 15, and for the third year running, Marshwood took first place and Massabesic second.

Not every school brings an athlete in every weight class to States. Windham, for instance, brought six wrestlers (Samantha Frank, 106 pounds; Sebastian Foster, 113; Jesse Mailer, 126; Brandon Huntington, 132; Dominick Cancelarich, 138; and Eric Cash, 145).

Although none of his kids claimed a title, Eagles head coach Jason Dryburgh spoke proudly of their performances anyway. Of an early bout that Foster lost, Dryburgh said, “That was probably his best match – the most assertive I’ve seen him on the mat as a freshman. It’s a long season but a short season, so it’s taken him time to kind of develop and get to where he needs to be…It was impressive.”

Dryburgh called Frank “tough,” and lamented only having one season to work with her – she’s a senior this year. “She’s a fan favorite. Whenever she gets a win, everybody claps for her.”

Any wrestlers who place in the top four at States advances to the New England qualifier. “From there, it’s top three from the state of Maine for [Classes] A, B and C,” Dryburgh said.

Among these top finishers was Robbie Martin of Bonny Eagle, who posted his team’s best result, first in the 170-pound division. Isaiah Reynolds earned fourth at 285.

“There’s a lot of good competition,” Scots assistant coach Jack Kenney said. “It’s anybody’s game. Unfortunately it’s not our game today. We’ve got a young team, we’re struggling a little bit, but overall…we’re doing all right.”
