I visited Portland over Presidents Day weekend and returned home Tuesday. I was disappointed that – 24 hours after a storm – the sidewalks had not been cleared of snow, especially in the Old Port.

My hosts, who negotiate the city mostly on foot, had warned me of this. But surely they, more than a tourist like myself, deserve better than to have to walk in the middle of the road in order to avoid slipping and falling.
