WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) — Authorities say a mosque and a church in Waukegan are the latest target of vandals who have been spray painting graffiti on houses of worship in Chicago’s northern suburbs.

The (Lake County) News-Sun reported Wednesday that graffiti was discovered Monday at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Christian Church and the Islamic North Foundation mosque.

Authorities say the graffiti was the same as that painted on nine churches in Gurnee in the past week. It includes a phrase and expletive to mock the congregation’s faith with a smiley face beneath the words.

Gurnee police have released a security camera photograph of a suspected vandal and a silver or light-colored SUV. They’re hoping the public can help identify those responsible.

Waukegan Mayor Wayne Motley promises the case will be solved.
