BIDDEFORD — On Thursday, a new traffic light was installed at the Five Points intersection. The traffic light replaces a yield sign at a point where motorists heading west on Route 111 meet. Those driving from Route 1 and Route 111 are required to give motorists from West Street the right of way.

The light was placed at the “slip lane” in front of D’Angelo’s.

According to Deputy Police Chief JoAnne Fisk, Maine Department of Transportation traffic engineers determined the change was needed because of multiple accidents at the intersection from motorists who did not yield to West Street traffic.

In addition to the light, signs reading “No Turn on Red” have also been posted and turns are now only allowed when the traffic light is green.

Those violating the new regulations will be given warning tickets through approximately March 13, said Fisk. Traffic tickets and fines may be issued after that date.
