SACO — Dorothy E. Powers, 90, of Saco, passed away early Thursday morning on Feb. 27, 2014 at Maine Veteran’s Home in Scarborough.

She was born in Toledo, Ohio on Sept. 10, 1923, a daughter of Theodore and Clara (Finch) Buhler.

She was a graduate of St. Luke’s Nursing School in Toledo, Ohio.

Dorothy was a registered nurse and lieutenant in the United States Army during World War II.

After the service, she was a homemaker who enjoyed raising her family.

Dorothy and her husband, Robert, owned and operated a hardware store and bowling alley in Ohio.

She enjoyed gardening, the outdoors and going to the beach. She was an avid reader.

In 1971, the family moved to Old Orchard Beach. They owned cottages for tourist rentals. In 1984, she retired and moved to Florida.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Robert F. Powers in 1974; her brother, Stanley Buhler; and her sister, Betty Bierley.

She is survived by: three sons, Ted D. Powers of Tallahassee, Fla., Kim R. Powers and wife Kathy of Biddeford and Pepper P. Powers and his wife Jean of Odenton, Md.; three daughters, Victoria A. Merickel and her husband Alan of Oakland, Calif., Pamela P. Johnson of St. Cloud, Fla. and Jody W. Powers and her husband Roger Chenard of Saco; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
