A second person has died following a head-on collision last week in Embden, police said.

Ruth Souweine, 67, of Bangor, died Sunday from injuries sustained in the two-car crash on Route 16, according to a news release Monday morning from the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

Last Thursday at about 4:30 p.m., a 2012 Chevy Malibu driven by Mark R. Schobel collided head-on with a 2012 Subaru Outback driven by Leon Souweine.

Jennifer Nile, 22, a passenger in the Chevy, died shortly after the crash.

Schobel and Souweine were taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Leon Souweine was treated and released from Redington-Fairview Hospital in Skowhegan on Thursday. There was no information available on Schobel’s condition.

The crash, which occurred near the Hunnewell Valley Off Road, a popular mud run location, is still under investigation, according to Dale Lancaster, chief deputy for the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

“We are continuing on the investigation and we met this morning to talk about how to move forward in the investigation,” Lancaster said Monday morning. “It’s unfortunate that there was another fatality.”
