SOUTH PORTLAND – South Portland firefighters quickly extinguished an electrical fire that broke out Monday night in a locomotive that had been parked at the Rigby Yard.

Fire Chief Kevin Guimond said the fire broke out in a locomotive engine just before 11 p.m. He described it as an electrical fire that started inside an engine control panel.

Firefighters used dry powder to extinguish the flames and smoke they encountered when they arrived. The fire was out by about 11:15 p.m. but the locomotive sustained significant damage, Guimond said.

Guimond said the locomotive was not connected to any storage cars and posed no threat to area residents. The train yard is located between the Cash Corner and Thornton Heights neighborhoods.
