A turnaround season for the Maine women’s basketball team will include postseason play.

The Black Bears found out Monday that they are one of 16 teams selected for the Women’s Basketball Invitational tournament and will host Bucknell in the first round Wednesday.

Teams pay $10,000 for home games in the WBI, which has existed since 2009. Maine athletic director Karlton Creech said last week he was confident the school would make up that money through ticket sales and concessions.

Maine (16-14) lost to Hartford in overtime in the America East Conference quarterfinals. Bucknell (16-13) also fell in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League tournament.

The Black Bears won only four games a season ago, so postseason play is a surprise bonus for seniors such as Ashleigh Roberts. Second-round games in the WBI are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

Detroit won last year’s tournament.
