Armand Hamel

BIDDEFORD — Armand Hamel, 88, of Biddeford, died on March 20, 2014 at Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford.

He was born on Nov. 24, 1925, a son of William and Georgianna (Drouin) Hamel.

He attended St. Andre parochial school and one year at St. Louis High School. He later received his GED from Biddeford High School, in 1980.

On May 6, 1950, he married Rita Laflamme at the former St. Andre’s Church.

He worked a short while at Saco Lowell Shop. During the mid-1940s, he was a welder at Portland Shipyard and then worked for Thompson’s DeSoto & Plymouth Car Dealer and Gowen’s Shell Station. From 1955-75, he managed the Shell Station at Five Points in Biddeford. For the next 10 years, he was employed by Crepeau Motors in Kennebunk. Then he started a lawn care business at Granite Point, Beach Wood and Fortunes Rocks.

In his spare time, he was an avid vegetable and flower gardener.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by: three sisters, Laurette L’Heureux, Blanche Crepeau and Juliette Berkman; and three brothers, Conrad, Urbain and Roland Hamel.

He is survived by: his wife of 63 years, Rita Hamel of Biddeford; four daughters, Joanne Carmody and her husband Dave of Epping, N.H., Patricia Grecco and her husband Steve of Charlotte, N.C., Diane Arbour of Hickory, N.C. and Elaine D’Alessandro of Biddeford; one sister, Therese Rodgers of Florida; five grandchildren, Julia Carmody, Emily Ford and her husband Chris, Mathew Dubois, Dominic and Luke D’Alessandro; one great-grandson, CJ Ford; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be 4-7 p.m. on Monday, March 24, 2014 at Hope Memorial Chapel. A memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 10 a.m at St. Joseph’s Church.
