OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Charles E. Jenkins Sr., 88, of Old Orchard Beach, passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2014 at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Scarborough.

He was born in Somerville, Mass. on June 21, 1925, a son of Charles and Charlotte (Taylor) Jenkins.

He was educated in Woburn schools.

Charles served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1941-45. He was a member of the 1st Marine Division and was on the first landing at Guadalcanal.

Charles married his wife, Flo, on Feb. 18, 1950.

He was employed as a police officer at Harvard University for 25 years.

He was a sports enthusiast who loved following his grandchildren’s sporting activities and school events. Charlie will be remembered for his sense of humor, quick wit and great personality.

He volunteered at The Wardwell in Saco as well as the animal shelter in Old Orchard Beach. He was a member of the Biddeford Saco Lodge of Elks and VFW in Old Orchard Beach. Mr. Jenkins was a parishioner of St. Margaret’s Church in Old Orchard Beach.

He is survived by: his wife of 64 years, Florence (Minihan) Jenkins of Old Orchard Beach; two sons, Charles E. Jenkins Jr. of San Francisco, Calif. and John M. Jenkins of Portland; one daughter, Charlene M. Uldbjerg and her husband Donald of Saco; three grandchildren, Shawn Stetson and his wife Melanie, Eric Uldbjerg and Nicolas Jenkins; two great-grandchildren, Sophie and Lucy; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be from 10-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2014 with a funeral service at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Cote Funeral Home, 87 James St. in Saco.
