SANFORD — Donald “Don” Manchester, 88, loving husband, died peacefully on April 5, 2014 at St. Andre’s Health Care in Biddeford.

He was born in Fall River, Mass. on April 24, 1925, a son of the late Ronald and Florence (Bernard) Manchester.

Don grew up in Little Compton, R.I. and graduated from Wilber High School.

Don went directly into the Army where he fought in Rhineland, Central Europe. He received, for his service, several commendations: Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Campaign Ribbon and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon.

After his service, Don was an arborist until he began to work at the Foxboro Co., retiring in 1985. 

Don was a dedicated Yankees fan and was not afraid to let you know it.

Don is survived by: his wife, Lucille Manchester of Sanford; brother, Ronald of Little Compton, R.I.; sister, Yvette Weaver of Corpus Christi, Texas; stepsons, Paul Gilson Jr. and Thomas Gilson; and nephew, Roald Manchester.

A funeral service for Don will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. at The Sanford Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Westview Drive in Sanford. Burial with military honors will be at a later date at the Southern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Springvale. Condolences may be expressed at www.blackfuneralhomes.com.
