The older photo was featured on the front page of the April 19, 1994, Portland Press Herald in a story about the Sea Dogs’ first-ever home game at Hadlock Field, on April 18, 1994. From the original caption:

“Fans stand up and cheer on opening day at the new Hadlock Stadium as Charles Johnson, Portland Sea Dogs catcher, cracks a home run against the Albany-Colonie Yankees. A ninth-inning rally fell short, however, and the Sea Dogs lost by a score of 7-6.”

The Sea Dogs fared better on this year’s opening day, depicted in the newer photograph. The team defeated the New Britain Rock Cats 6-4.

The Portland Room of the Portland Public Library is in the process of organizing and conserving the archival collection of original Portland Press Herald, Maine Sunday Telegram and Evening Express photographic negatives — a major collection that spans from 1937 to 2005.
