WINSLOW — A man wielding a metal snow shovel broke windows and damaged doors at an apartment building at 92 Clinton Ave. Thursday, injuring and bloodying himself before being taken into protective custody, according to police.

The man, who police said appeared to be “in an altered state of mind,” lives in the building and was having a dispute with other tenants when police were called there at 12:53 p.m., according to Sgt. Haley Fleming.

The man, who police would not identify because he had not been charged, was taken by Delta Ambulance to the Thayer Center for Health in Waterville to be evaluated, Fleming said.

The incident was not related to domestic violence, he said.

“He was covered in quite a bit of blood,” Fleming said Thursday. “His injuries were due to his reckless behavior. He was detained and secured to go to the hospital for safety reasons.”

Fleming said charges of criminal mischief and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon could be filed against the man, but first his mental health will be evaluated. Fleming said the man could be taken to Alfond Center for Health in Augusta for an overnight stay.

Winslow officer Brandon Lund is investigating the incident, which may have also involved burglary or aggravated criminal trespass, Fleming said.

After police left the apartment Thursday, tenants stood outside the apartment building, which is at the corner of Kidder Street, and surveyed the damage.

A toddler peered through a first-floor window at large shards of glass piled on the ground below a window that was broken during the rampage. Tenants would not comment or identify themselves, except to say that a toddler witnessed it and was frightened.
