Two Unity men, including one who’s a certified marijuana caregiver, were arrested Thursday on a variety of drug trafficking charges at their Short Road home.

The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency arrested Robert Hubbard, 51, and Spencer McGarey, 43, according to a news release from Stephen McCausland, state Department of Public Safety spokesman.

Hubbard was charged with Class C trafficking in schedule Z drugs (marijuana) and Class C possession of hydromorphone. McGarey was charged with Class C trafficking in schedule Z drugs (marijuana) and Class C trafficking in schedule W drugs (heroin).

Hubbard is registered with the state as a certified caregiver under the Maine Medical Use Marijuana Program. Police say Hubbard was selling marijuana he grew at his Unity home to non-qualified patients.

The arrests came after a two-month investigation by the Mid-Coast District Task Force that included undercover purchases of marijuana from Hubbard and heroin from McGarey, according to the news release.

A search Thursday by drug agents uncovered 94 marijuana plants, none of which had legible tags affixed to them bearing the qualified patient’s name as required by law, according to the release.

Also seized were more than five pounds of processed marijuana, “numerous” prescription pills including hydromorphone, and three guns.

Neither Hubbard nor McGarey have prescriptions for medical marijuana and no qualified patients live at the house, the release said.

Hubbard and McGarey were taken to Waldo County Jail in Belfast and the investigation is continuing.

Maine State Police and deputies from the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office particpated in the investigation, the release said.
